A 2-door sports car owned by the General Motors Chevrolet division, the Chevrolet Corvette was first designed by a gentleman named Harley Earl and was first introduced as a concept car in 1953. The car takes its name from the small, easily manoeuvrable warship called a corvette.
Such a classic Sports Car in the United States, when an American thinks of “sports car” they instantly think of a Chevy Corvette, which has been used 12 times as the Indianapolis 500 pace car and is a grand touring racing car.
There have been 7 generations of the Corvette in total since its birth in 1953. The latest, the 2014 Corvette Stingray Coupe & Convertible are due out sometime this year.
The car is currently the official sports car of the Commonwealth of Kentucky, where they are currently manufactured, although they were originally built in Flint, Michigan.
In it's first year of production, 300 First Generation Chevrolet Corvettes were produced. The next year, they increased the number to 3,640, and since the beginning over 1.3 million have been made.
